Challenges in Copper Recycling

Copper helps in providing light and durable maintenance-free structures that are naturally long lasting and infinitely recyclable. Copper has the highest electrical conductivity in metals (apart from silver) and makes it ideal for electrical use. It is used for power generation and transmission – it is an important component in motors, generators and transformers. Apart from traditional use in electricity generation, copper is also used in new technologies for renewable energy from solar, wind, and geothermal sources.

25% of all the copper produced is used in construction – for plumbing, roofing, and cladding.

Copper recycling is not something that can be executed on individual basis, unfortunately. It is usually executed by commercial recycling businesses of all scales for example, car breakers, plumbing companies, or recycling companies. Thus, one of the biggest challenges that copper recycling faces is the lack of awareness for sending the copper to correct and efficient collection point for recycling.

Copper is extensively used in an average household wiring. This can be a difficult item to recycle as it needs to be purified of any of metals or contaminants to make it fit to be used again in electrical components. Almost all copper wiring used for small electrical wiring must be almost pure, devoid of any surface flaws to prevent breaks during rod production. Copper has an infinite recyclable life. This means that copper can be recycled repeatedly without losing its value. (https://copperalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ica-copper-recycling-201712-A4-HR2.pdf)  If the scrap is pure copper and not been contaminated; high quality product can be made from it. Likewise, if scrap consists only of one alloy composition, it is comparatively easier to re-melt to a good quality product. If scrap is mixed, contaminated, or includes other materials such as solder – when this is re-melted, it will be more complex to adjust the composition. (https://www.copper.org/environment/lifecycle/ukrecyc.html

It is easier to adjust the composition wherein lead, or tin had been included, but no harmful impurities. For copper scraps that are contaminated with impurities, we may recycle it by diluting it during melting process. This brings down the he impurity levels to an acceptable range of specification. Copper scrap that has been contaminated beyond acceptable limits has to be re-refined back to pure copper using conventional secondary metal refining techniques.

Scrap metal yards in Dubai play a crucial role in keeping costs of copper down. Production costs are reduced significantly. Recycling a tone of copper uses 15% of the energy that would be used to mine copper. Not only does recycling help in conserving the world's supply of fossil fuels but also reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Copper scrap in Dubai is efficiently recycled and reused with initiatives that deploy clean methods by Lucky Recycling, part of Lucky Group, one amongst the metal recycling companies in Dubai.

Aluminium creates highlights on the work

Aluminum is one of the important metals which are widely used for different purposes but one of the attractions for using aluminium which defines its success these days in art and fashion industry.

“Through sculpture I try to create something unique out of an ordinary object.” Noah Deledda

Detroit-born artist Noah Deledda turns trash into treasure by transforming old aluminium cans into sculptures (https://mymodernmet.com/aluminium-can-sculptures-noah-deledda/) . The amazing architectural structures and heavenly man-made metal art prove that old goods can be transformed into new pieces by adopting creative ideas by reusing or recycling items that may have been sent to garbage dump or landfill.

Have you ever thought when an item breaks down or does not function properly, we fix it or reuse it, rather than throwing it out? Technically a form of reusing, recycling is the reprocessing of waste into raw materials for use in making a new product. BUT do you know that we can invest in products that can be reused? For that you just need to be creative, resourceful and innovative. BUT HOW?

THINK DIFFERENTLY; ask yourself, “What can I make out of this?” You may be able to come up with valuable ideas. For example does an object’s shape remind you of something else? What happens when you turn it upside down? Does it look different? Does it remind you of something else? Like Noah Deledda uses his thumb to create dents and creases in the disposable object’s surface, resulting in incredible three-dimensional sculptures adorned in flawless, geometric patterns. The whole idea is of diverting waste into wealth. Lucky Recycling handles wide range of aluminium scrap metals which are an excellent choice for industrial applications. As an Urban miner in the region, we always help you out with your intentions about recycling metals at different locations in UAE.  We are privileged to deal with some of the loyal customers in different parts of the world who have always appreciated our service and quality of products.

Let’s encourages people to recycle waste scrap metals to get rid of landfill garbage because pollution is man’s as well as the earth’s common enemy.

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

 ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9000).  It is a standard that is used by organizations to demonstrate their ability to provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It also demonstrates continuous improvement. Among the different documents in the ISO 9000 family of standards, ISO 9001 is the only standard that requires certification. The current certification version is ISO 9001:2015 (https://www.iso.org/iso-9001-quality-management.html). Things to note:

1. Size of the organization does not matter – IS0 9001 can be implemented across organizations.

2. Nature of the industry does not matter (service or manufacturing).

3. ISO 9001 is not a standard for products and does not define product quality – it is in fact, a process-based standard.

4. ISO 9001 is not personal standard. An individual cannot get certified to ISO 9001. The organization or company becomes certified.

Note: Individuals can become an ISO 9001 certified Lead Auditor after completing a training course. It allows them to audit other companies.

5. In order to become ISO 9001 certified, an organization must:

Follow the required procedure to implement ISO 9001 quality management system (QMS). (https://the9000store.com/step-by-step/ )

Next, a Certification Body audits the performance of the organization against the latest version of the ISO 9001 Requirements. (https://the9000store.com/iso-9001-2015-requirements/)

The Registrar issues an ISO 9001 Certificate for a three-year period after the organization passes the audit.

6. To maintain their ISO 9001 certification status, the organization must be re-certified every three years.

ISO 14001

The ISO 14000 family has applications for companies that use practical tools in order to manage their environmental responsibilities (https://www.iso.org/iso-14001-environmental-management.html). The ISO 14001 defines the criteria for an environmental management system. It maps the outline that a company/organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. (https://www.iso.org/standard/60857.html

ISO 14001 is designed for any type of organization – it is an aid that can provide assurance to company management, employees, and stakeholders that environmental impact of the organization is being measured and consistently upgraded.

1. ISO 14001 provides requirements and guidance for use that relates to environmental systems.

2. Other standards in the 14000 family focuses on specific approaches, for example, audits, communications, labelling, life cycle analysis, and environmental challenges such as climate change.

3. ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system. This system can be used by an organization to enhance its environmental performance. It is intended to ease an organization’s environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.

4. The desired output of ISO 14001 includes:

Improvement in environmental performance.

Implementation of compliance obligations.

Attainment of environmental objectives.

5. ISO 14001 is applicable to any organization regardless of its size, type, and nature. It applies to the environmental aspects of the organization’s activities, products and services. However, ISO 14001 does not state specific environmental performance criteria.

From the recycling companies in UAE, it is recommended to choose a company that adheres to quality standards and adheres to their responsibility towards environment sustainability.
